If your house has caught the attention of woodpeckers, they may be looking for insects or a place to nest. Woodpeckers can damage wood siding and soffits on structures. These birds normally forage for insect prey on the trunks and branches of trees. Woodpeckers are adored visitors to our backyards. While woodpeckers may be nice to watch, they cause damage to your homes and trees so it is important to know how to get rid of woodpeckers.
CWR is an Ohio bird removal and bird next removal company that also removes feces and sanitizes infected areas. Cottom’s Wildlife Removal provides bird removal, control, exclusion, cleanup, decontamination and damage repair services in Columbus, Cleveland, Toledo and Cincinnati, Ohio. Our bird control specialists remove and clean up animal and bird waste and feces from homes and businesses in Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and other cities in Ohio. If you are looking for woodpecker removal services in Cleveland, woodpecker control services in Cincinnati, woodpecker removal services in Toledo or woodpecker pest control near you in Columbus, contact Cottom’s Wildlife Removal company to permanently get rid of woodpeckers and to stop woodpeckers from pecking at your house or making holes in your cedar siding. If you want to effectively prevent woodpecker damage, call 440-236-8114.
CWR bird control specialists provide permanents solutions by installing safe and reliable products such as readymade artificial decoy owls with reflective eyes, woodpecker deterrent netting (3/4″ mesh), plastic woodpecker netting and wire mesh.
Please note that Cottom’s Wildlife Removal company is NOT classified as a “woodpecker exterminator“. There are penalties for killing woodpeckers they have special federal protection. All woodpeckers are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. (MBTA). This law states: “No person may take (kill), possess, import, export, transport, sell, purchase, barter, or offer for sale, any migratory bird, or the parts, nests, or eggs of such bird except as may be permitted under the terms of a valid permit…”
When warranted, woodpeckers can be killed, but only under a depredation permit issued by the Law Enforcement Division of the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Authorization by the relevant state wildlife agency also may be required before lethal control methods are initiated. Sound justification must be present for the issuance of depredation permits. Hazing woodpeckers does not require a permit. Download the Depredation Permit, here.
Application for a depredation permit for some species of woodpeckers may be an option, but should be considered as a last resort. Proper exclusion, harassment, and monitoring will be necessary to demonstrate that need. Permits will be issued only if non-lethal methods have previously been tried and failed. The applicant must show strong justification (i.e. where significant structural damage has resulted in an economic hardship).
You many need a pest exterminator to get rid of an underlying insect problem because woodpeckers like to peck on houses to feed on insects. Woodpeckers eat carpenter bees, termites, wood-boring beetles, carpenter ants, leafcutter bees and grass bagworms. Woodpeckers also hammer on homes in Ohio to create a nesting cavity, to store food or to attract a mate.
Why Are Woodpeckers Drumming On My Property? [From The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service]
Woodpeckers, sapsuckers, and flickers drum and drill on a variety of surfaces. Siding (aluminum or wood), trim boards, and wood boards on any kind of structure can be appealing to woodpeckers. The resulting damage can appear as simple dents (usually a line) or as large as 2-inch diameter holes. Woodpeckers drum and drill in their search for food, territorial and social displays, and to nest in the cavities created. Sapsuckers drill small holes for sap, while many other woodpeckers drill for woodboring insects such as carpenter bees, leafcutter bees, grass bagworms, etc. Drumming for territory or social reasons will most likely occur in the early spring at the start of the breeding season. Drilling for nest cavities usually occurs in the early spring, although some drilling occurs in the fall.
How Do I Keep Woodpeckers From Damaging My Property? [From The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service]
The best way to stop woodpecker damage to personal property is to begin damage control as soon as you begin hearing drumming and continuing until well after the woodpecker leaves the area. Holes the bird has made should be filled and painted immediately. If a nest is already active, we recommend that control measures be postponed until the young leave the nest permanently, which is usually around midsummer, but can vary depending on the species. Physical exclusion is probably the most effective control method. Installing bird-netting from the outer eaves down the side of the building is typically effective at excluding most woodpeckers.
Other methods include:
• Frightening devices (models of owls and hawks, spinners, windsocks, etc.) can be used, although these devices have inconsistent success.
• Tactile deterrents are sometimes used with marginal success. However, some products can get on feathers and impair the bird’s ability to fly and stay warm.
• Sound deterrents coupled with motion detection are another option. Typically this would involve playing the recording of a woodpecker distress call followed by a raptor call.
• Tying a burlap bag or other heavy fabric around a tree (particularly ornamental trees) can be effective at preventing sapsucker damage.
How To Repel And Deter Woodpeckers To Frighten Them Away
If you want to try to repel woodpeckers with smells and scents, peppermint oil may work. Other DIY ways to get rid of woodpeckers include woodpecker deterrent kits, spraying your house with woodpecker repellents and visual deterrents such as pinwheels, balloons, reflective tape and windsocks.
Because woodpecker damage in Ohio is considered a maintenance issue that is the responsibility of the homeowner, woodpecker damage is probably NOT covered by your home insurance (homeowner’s insurance). Find out more about preventing woodpeckers from damaging your home, here.
Woodpeckers in Ohio are small to medium-sized birds that prey on insect species that dead trees attract and woodpeckers rely on the softening branches and trunks to excavate their nests.

How Do CWR Professionals Get Rid Of Bats And Remove Guano In Ohio?
CWR pest control technicians first perform an inspection and assessment to determine how bats are getting into a residential or commercial structure. CWR pest control experts then seal all entry points except for the main gateway. A one way exclusion device (one-way bat door or valve) is installed to humanely allow the bats to escape the building at dusk. However, the bats can not get back into the structure to roost at dawn. After bats have been removed, CWR pest control technicians carefully remove bat guano and then disinfect attics.
If the bat is in plain site when a CWR bat control technician arrives at a residence and it can be easily removed, the cost is $239. CWR home inspectors in Northern Ohio charge $239 to check for bats and to find their entry point. Bats in a house can make you sick. It is dangerous to have bats in your attic because they dangerous diseases.
CWR performs “live exclusions” in order to protect bats, as opposed to exterminating bats. The removal of bats is protected by law in Ohio. Federal law safeguards bats and their habitat. Bat conservation is important. Even though bats are scary looking and worry people, in general they are good and provide numerous benefits to humanity. They feast on insects every night.
Bats eat flies, beetles, moths, other insects and occasionally mosquitoes and control insect populations very well. Bats act as pollinators and seed dispersers of many forms of plant life that are crucial to humans. Bat populations are one of the best natural indicators of the health of our surroundings and environment.
Hibernating and roosting areas are protected by law. Find out how to capture a bat in your house by watching this video on YouTube.
If you find one bat in your house, there could be more in the attic or walls. CWR bat control experts use exclusion to remove bats from houses. Bats can squeeze through a hole the size of a quarter or a crack as small as a half an inch.
Removing a bat in Northern Ohio can cost as little as $239. The average cost of bat removal, exclusion and cleanup for a one story house is $695 to $3,000, $995 to $8,000 for a two story house and $995 to $12,000 for a commercial building.

There are 11 species of bats found throughout Ohio. All of these species are insectivorous (feed on insects) and are nocturnal (active at night) or crepuscular (most active at dusk and dawn). Bats are beneficial because they feed on and help to control many agricultural pests.
Depending on the species, some bats such as the hoary bat, the red bat and the silver-haired bat, migrate south in the cold winter months when insects are rare in Ohio. Other bats hibernate during the winter. In Ohio, bats typically hibernate from late October to early April in caves, abandoned mines, cracks in large rock outcroppings or attics and buildings.
If a bat is in your house and you have any question about whether the bat has been in contact with people or pets, you will want to have the bat captured and tested. Call your local health department and animal control agency for assistance. If professional assistance is not available, please follow the steps described in the video below to safely capture the bat and save it for testing.
Histoplasmosis is caused by the fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum. Histoplasma can be found in soil throughout the Ohio Valley, but it can also be shed in large numbers in bat droppings. People can get histoplasmosis after breathing in the microscopic fungal spores from the air.
Although most people who breathe in the spores don’t get sick, those who do may have a fever, cough and fatigue. Many people who get histoplasmosis will get better on their own without medication, but in some people, such as those with weakened immune systems, the infection can become severe. Contact your healthcare provider for more information about testing and treatment.
Additional information is available on protecting workers at risk for histoplasmosis.
Rabies virus can infect any species of mammal. It causes encephalitis and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. It is spread when a person or animal is bitten by an infected animal or, less commonly, when saliva from an infected animal gets into an open wound or onto a mucous membrane.
Most of the human rabies cases acquired within the United States during the past 20 years were due to bat strains of rabies. Since a bat bite is very small and may go undetected, the history of any potential bat contact should be carefully evaluated to determine the potential for exposure. All exposures should be reported to the local health department and the bat tested for rabies if it is available.
It is also important to vaccinate your pets against rabies. Bats can enter your home through an opening as small as a quarter inch by a half inch. It is important to examine your home for holes that might allow bats to enter your living quarters. This is why even indoor cats should be vaccinated against rabies.
Is Bat Removal Covered By Homeowners Insurance?
Removing bats from an attic is rarely covered by a standard home insurance policy although the costs to repair the damage caused by bats is frequently covered. Attic insulation can be destroyed by bat droppings.
To find out if cleanup and decontamination services are covered, contact your insurance agent.
Most insurance companies do not cover bat removal because they consider the infestation to be a roof maintenance issue.

Their nest (built by both parents) is made of material such as grass, weeds, twigs, trash, often lined with feathers. The noise can be annoying, especially because they start singing at the very first light. Their feces contain uric acid which is corrosive.

What To Do About Skunks [The Humane Society of the United States]
A gentle species rarely worth raising a stink over
Skunks, easily identifiable by their characteristic black and white striping, are infamous for producing a foul odor when frightened. Although a skunk’s spray is known mostly for its robust smell, it can also cause intense discomfort if it gets into a person or animal’s eyes. Fortunately, these mild-mannered creatures rarely use this potent defense, and provide quite a few benefits to the areas they inhabit. In cases where eviction is necessary, a few mild harassment and deterrence techniques can help you humanely remove skunks while escaping smell-free. Read more here.

Is It Legal To Shoot Raccoons In Ohio?
Posted By Terry Turner, An Ohio Resident
In general, and within limits, yes.
The state’s official raccoon hunting and trapping season currently runs for 12 weeks in the winter months, bracketing the winter solstice. For example, the most recent season ran from November 10, 2019 to January 31, 2020.
Outside hunting and trapping, it is legal to shoot a raccoon that is on your property and threatening you, other people, your livestock or pets, your crops, or your belongings.
Raccoon pelts once commanded a handsome bounty, but those days are long gone and are unlikely to return. Demand for the skins is a tiny fraction of what it was when raccoon coats and coonskin caps were popular. Naturally, hunting and trapping in the state have tapered off sharply.
Because there are almost no natural raccoon predators in Ohio, raccoon populations have exploded in many areas. Their unending quest for food brings them into increasing contact with humans. Raccoons will take up residence inside farm buildings and dwellings, sometimes even occupied houses. They forage for food nightly, raiding garbage cans and dumpsters, feed bins, and truck gardens. They’ll happily eat dog or cat food, and consider sweet corn on the stalk a particular treat. They are known carriers of diseases, including rabies. They are vicious when cornered, and sometimes aggressive when they’re not, raiding henhouses and killing chickens at random. Raccoons are agile climbers and amazingly skilled at manipulating objects with their front paws.
Can You Trap Skunks In Ohio?
Yes, you can trap skunks in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and other places in Ohio. Cottom’s Wildlife Removal specializes in trapping skunks and catch them all the time for our customers.
According to Rule 1501:31-15-03 of the Ohio Administrative Code, it is illegal to fail to euthanize, or release on site, any skunk that is captured, trapped or taken. However, it is illegal to take a skunk with the use of dogs outside of a structure during the closed season.
Skunks Are A Nuisance
In Ohio, you can hire the Cottom’s Wildlife Removal company to do the skunk trapping and pickup. Because trapping skunks is not easy, you should consider hiring a wildlife expert to avoid the challenge. CWR pest control technicians use live traps to remove skunks for homeowners in Ohio and they rarely get sprayed.
According to the Ohio Department Of Natural Resources, skunks and opossums seldom cause damage to property other than raiding garbage or eating pet food. They sometimes reside under buildings or in rock and wood piles. Discourage visits by taking appropriate precautions.
- In confined spaces skunks or opossums may be driven away by placing an ammonia-soaked towel in the den.
- Install a one-way door until you are sure the animal(s) have left, then permanently seal the entrance.
- An animal that becomes trapped in a window well will climb out if you place a rough board in the well that extends to the top.
- If an animal gets into the house, open a door and calmly allow it to exit.
- Never chase or excite a skunk.
Raccoons live in chimneys as well as attics. It is a piece of cake for a raccoon to climb down the chimney flue. In the spring and summer months, many Ohio homeowners discover that they have one or more raccoons trapped or living in their chimney.
If a mother raccoon sees an uncapped fireplace chimney or furnace venting chimney, she envisions the perfect nursery. Horizontal “smoke shelves” in fireplace chimneys are a safe sheltered place to give birth, nestle with her kits and raise her young until they are old enough.
To learn how to get raccoons out of your chimney, watch this video. After the raccoon has been removed, the nesting debris should be removed and a chimney cap should be installed. To find out how much it costs to remove raccoons from a chimney in Ohio call 440-236-8114.

How to Evict Your Raccoon Roommates | National Geographic
Posted On YouTube On April 29, 2016 By National Geographic [NationalGeographic.com]
See how researchers humanely remove raccoons from house attics and crawl spaces. Wild raccoons are adaptable creatures that find cities to be rich in food and shelter. They move into homes and other buildings, which often leads to conflict with their human neighbors. With the help of high-tech cameras, National Geographic grantee John Hadidian is studying raccoon behavior in order to develop ways to evict raccoons from human dwellings while enabling them to survive in the urban habitat.
